An important update about the KSMS Fund

The Ken Smith Memorial Scholarship Fund is broadening it's campaign to help young referees. A system is currently being developed to help young referees with class fees, registration fees and/or uniform costs. Our goal is to begin implementing that system in the spring of 2018.

The available funds for this financial assistance will still be in direct proportion to the success of our fund-raising events. We began in 2006 with our first scramble which continues today. Although the previous events have been very successful, we continue to receive many more requests for assistance than there are funds available.

The scramble originated from a lunch conversation over BBQ in June of 2005 after a round of golf at Woodbridge in Wylie. It started as a way to have some fun with friends and raise a few dollars to help out a young referee or two and as they say, the rest is history. The tournament was originally named the TASO Soccer Golf Scramble. With the untimely passing of Ken Smith on April 19, 2008, the scholarship fund and scramble were renamed in his honor. Ken was a great friend to the referee community, was always there to help a developing young referee and enjoyed playing golf when time allowed.

In Sept 2016, Ken Smith Memorial Scramble and Greyhound Adoption League of Texas combined to host one event, Racers 'n Referees Round of 18. At first glance, the two organizations (KSMS and GALT) have little in common, but upon closer inspection, both organizations are helping athletes of a different sort. KSMS (soccer referees) and GALT (retired racers). With GALT bringing out their greyhounds to many of the KSMS events, it seems it was a natural match as soccer people fell in love with the greyhounds and began adopting them from the start. After GALT organized two golf tournaments of their own, the two organizations decided that using the resources of both organizations would likely produce an even more successful event than either had organized on their own.

Information about our fund-raising golf tournaments can be found at: Racers 'n Referees

Effective June 1, 2009, the Ken Smith Memorial Scramble became Incorporated in the State of Texas and the IRS officially recognized it as a 501(c)3 charitable organization.

Applications for the scholarship fund are no longer being accepted. Please see the updated 'About KSMS' page for clarification.
